The backbone of the Welsh Cycling Association has always been the 12 hour Championship. Indeed the Association was founded, in 1934, for the purpose of running this event which, apart from the war years, has been a continuous promotion since then.

Originally formed as the South Wales Cycling Association the popularity of the sport in the 1950’s led to the inclusion of the whole of the Principality in its competitions. Later the area was extended to include those parts of England encompassed by the South Wales District of the Road Time Trials Council (now known as Cycling Time Trials).

Welsh Championships were introduced in 1951 and, responding to popular request, these have been extended to include Championships for Ladies, Junior and Juvenile riders. A few years later the WCA undertook the verification of Welsh Competition Records. The final year of the 20th century saw several new competition records and the season culminated in the 12 hour record being convincingly broken.

The WCA aims to meet the requirements of all riders – by promoting Championships which are open to all-comers; by examining claims to Competition records and by organising the Best-all-Rounder competition and Prize Presentation. The popular BAR lunch now sees around 200 cyclists meeting to cheer the year’s Champions. In 1996 the Association introduced the Magic Dragon Series which is recognised throughout the UK as an outstanding initiative in time-trial promotion and is popular with riders of all abilities and its competitions are keenly contested.

The WCA’s website was set up in 1996 and provides and provides information on all of the WCA's events as well as a forum.
